Many homeowners use spring to clean their homes and perform maintenance. Part of your seasonal routine should including taking care of your roof. Here are some ways you can make sure your roofing is properly serviced.
Check the Roof's Condition
Spring is a good time to check your roof's condition. Even though some days bring rain and other harsh elements, there are enough sunny days to thoroughly inspect your roof.
When inspecting your roof, you need to pay close attention to the shingles. Shingles that show signs of deterioration, such as curling or cracking, need to be replaced. These shingles are more likely to break or fall off during high winds, which commonly occur during the spring months.
You also need to look for loose material around your chimney and pipes. Loose materials can leave gaps that allow water and other elements into your home.
Your inspection of your roof does not end outside your home. You also need to inspect the roof from the inside. Look for signs of water damage in the attic and the interior walls. In addition to this, you need to look for holes in the ceiling.
Clean the Gutters
Your gutters more than likely took a beating during the winter. Due to cold weather, snow, rain, and other elements, getting outside to clean the gutters during the winter months can sometimes be impossible. However, now that it is spring, you can take advantage of the sunny weather to clean the gutters.
Clogged gutters are incapable of properly draining water, which can lead to water pooling up on your roof and also near the foundation. The result is a weakened roof or foundation issues.
Although it might be tempting to just use a water hose to clean leaves and other debris from your gutters, scoop it out with your hands instead. The water from the hose can actually lead to a clogging situation.
While cleaning the gutters, look for small granules from the shingles. If you notice any, it is time to talk to a contractor about replacing your shingles and possibly, the entire roofing structure.
As a final measure, ensure that the downspout is actually in position to push the water away from your home. If it is not, it needs to be moved so that the water is redirected. If not, water can start to seep through your roofing or puddle at your foundation.
As an extra precaution, consider hiring a roofing specialist to inspect your roofing at least once a year. He or she can ensure that the roof is in good condition and also provide you with further tips to maintain your roof.Share

When I married my husband 10 years ago, I agreed to move into the ranch home he already owned. Initially, we planned to live in this house for five years and then after a few years of marriage we wanted to buy our dream home. After our wedding, many things in our lives changed. We both got different jobs. And we decided to transform the house my husband owned when we married into our forever home. To accomplish this task, we have begun a major renovation project. The first job on our list was a new roof. On this blog, I hope you will discover the best types of roofs to install on a brick home.
